Type: PSone
Genre: Kart Racer
Developer: Naughty Dog

Crash Team Racing is the fourth installment in the Crash series, the first racing game, and the last to be developed by Naughty Dog. It is a classic kart racer and is loved by many. I was delighted when I found it on PlayStation Store and I am very sorry for our US friends who haven’t got it yet!

Gameplay: The controls are great. X to go, Square to brake, O to fire, R to drift and so on. There is no analog support which can be annoying but it is easy to get used to. Reverse is mapped to down on the D-Pad which gets annoying but, once again you get used to it. Racing is simple. Win by using weapons and boosts. Weapons are gotten by driving into boxes on the track and are very handy and have a lot of variety. Boosts can be gotten by driving over pads on the track, or by other means. Boosts can be a power up, or when you see a hill on the track and jump at the top, you will boost when you land. Another way to boost is to drift. While drifting a bar will fill at the bottom corner of the screen. When the bar goes red and your engine pumps black smoke, you tap L and get a boost. These systems really make you feel in control, and add to the experience. The only problem I had with the gameplay is how repetitive it can get.

Graphics: The Naughty Dog era Crash games were always noted for their top notch graphics, and CTR is no different. The game looks great for a PSone game. The water is nice, there are detailed textures and the karts and characters themselves look great. There are no performance issues either, like lag and screen tearing so graphically, the game is very good.

Sound: The music is good but can become annoying. All the music sounds similar and you will probably get sick of it. The karts sound good, with different sounds depending on your speed and the surface you are racing on. The characters might sometimes shout out things at relevant times, like shouting out while in the air.

Lifespan: Adventure mode will keep you going. After you beat Oxide there are relics, CTR tokens and gem cups to win. Even if you complete adventure mode 100%(or 102% if you’re amazing at the game) there are still time trials to beat. If you beat all of N. Tropy’s ghosts then you have to beat all Oxide’s ghosts which can take time. It is also nice to explore the free roam in adventure mode. It is medium sized for a PSone game and looks very nice.

I highly recommend CTR to anybody who likes games and especially to anybody who likes kart racers. Its only €3.99 so why not get it on the cheap?
